Dove House: Re-Use Electrical Shop re-opens in new location

A shop aimed at encouraging the reuse and repair of second-hand electrical goods has moved to a new location.

The Re-Use Electrical Shop, previously located on Marfleet Lane, has now re-opened within Dove House’s Furniture Superstore on Hessle Road.

Three times the size of the previous site, the shop aims to continue reducing waste by selling good quality second-hand electricals, which have been donated for reuse at the city’s household waste centres.

The new space also includes an appliance testing area and repair workshop.

First launched in July 2020, the shop is the result of a continued partnership between Dove House Hospice, Hull City Council, East Riding Council, and FCC Environment.

Doug Sharp, Head of Street Cleansing and Waste Management at Hull City Council, said: said: “The Re-Use Electrical Shop is fundamental to sustainable waste management, provides affordable options for residents and raises vital funds for Dove House Hospice. So, I am delighted that the store has now re-opened on a larger site.”

The scheme diverts good quality large domestic appliances for reuse from the network of 13 household waste recycling centres across Hull and East Riding.

The items are functionality tested, to make sure they are safe and work properly, repaired (if needed), and cleaned before being put up for sale in the shop.

Appliances sold included fridges, freezers, cookers, microwaves, washing machines, tumble driers and dishwashers.

The funds generated through the sale of the second-hand goods support Dove House Hospice.

Marisa Haines, Head of Retail at Dove House Hospice said: “The new store has been a tremendous success since we opened the doors last month, and we are delighted to say that we have raised a total of £5,979 so far.

“These funds play a vital part in caring for local patients with life-limiting illnesses as well as supporting their family and loved ones.”

Customer Jill Redhead said: “The space on Marfleet Lane was great, but this has that superstore feeling – it has everything, and the price is great!”

The Re-Use Electrical Shop is located at 244 – 246 Hessle Road, Hull.

The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
