Get ready to step back in time this weekend as Hull’s Museums Quarter is transformed into a bustling Roman encampment.

Romanfest is a free event that offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Roman soldiers and civilians. It takes place this Saturday (19) and Sunday (20 July) from 11am-4pm, and allows visitors to experience the sights, sounds, and stories of ancient Rome.

Visitors can witness the might of the Roman soldiers of Comitatus as they put on displays of formation and arms drills, demonstrating not only the use of spears, swords and axes, but also missile weapons such as the ballista, bow, javelin, darts and throwing axe. There will also be opportunities to learn about conditions of service in the Late Roman army, their recruitment, pay, rations, promotions and their hopes for the future.

Families will have the chance to delve deeper into what life was like in the Roman period by exploring living-history displays and watch Roman gladiator demonstrations with the Autonomous Reenactor Collective. They can also dress up as a Roman citizen or a gladiator at a selfie-station and capture the perfect Roman-themed photo to remember the day.

Romanfest will include re-enactments

Throughout the weekend, visitors can take part in have-a-go activities, making their own Roman inspired pottery, as well as creating helmets and mosaics in a special craft activity.

There’ll also be the chance to explore the myths of Hercules and the legendary battles between Queen Boudica and the Roman army, through interactive storytelling sessions.

Finally, for a small fee, visitors can try their hand at archery to see if they’d have been a master Roman archer.

This free event is part of the national Festival of Archaeology celebrations and allows visitors to experience the sights, sounds, and stories of ancient Rome.

Councillor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure said: “Romanfest is an incredible chance to step back in time and experience the Roman Empire at the Museums Quarter. This free event promises to be a fun and educational day out for the whole family.”
