Newington Neighbourhood Plan (NNP) has been endorsed by the local community following a landmark referendum in Hull.
Residents went to the polls and voted in favour of the plan which now forms part of Hull City Council’s Development Plan in Newington ward.
This is the first neighbourhood plan supported by the local community in Hull and is testament to the work done by the neighbourhood forum.
The plan was developed in line with the Localism Act and will be used to help determine planning applications and other investment.
Significant local engagement has taken place over a number of years and NNP contributes to locally determine investment priorities.
The NNP also aligns with the council’s Local Plan for the city by adding a level of local detail that is not contained in that plan.
The scheme will permit residents to address issue related to land use and enables them to develop a shared vision for Newington, whilst shaping its development and growth.
Councillor Paul Drake-Davis, portfolio holder for regeneration at the council, said: “This is an innovative and significant milestone in Hull and I am pleased to see the first of hopefully many neighbourhood plans to be produced.
“The council is always keen to hear resident and stakeholder views on all projects and this demonstrates how it has listened carefully to the views of people living in the Newington & Gipsyville ward.
“The Newington Neighbourhood Plan has taken some time to come to fruition, but it is pleasing that the council has supported the local community in its ambition to create its own vision and have a say on what they would like to see happen in their local area.
“Moving forward, we and the council would welcome further interest from other communities in the city wishing to create their own neighbourhood plans.”
