A campaign developed with local veterans, Armed Forces organisations and health partners aims to highlight the challenges that veterans face.

‘Silent Battles’ shows the importance of seeking support, rather than battling on in silence, and how veterans are an integral part of our communities.

The project has been commissioned by East Riding of Yorkshire Council and jointly funded with Hull City Council.

It consists of three short films, created by JayJay Media and available to view via the councils’ social media channels, featuring veterans and professionals, to explore what it means to be a veteran.

It is also working with Op COURAGE (North of England), the NHS Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service.

They provide specialist support for serving personnel that have a discharge date in the next 6 months, non-mobilised reservists, veterans and the families of all serving personnel reservists and veterans.

The campaign is being advised by Dr Jo Bell, from the University of Hull’s School of Psychology and Social Work.

It shows certain challenges that may be experienced after military service, which may include mental health issues such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, addictions, or suicidal thoughts.

It also includes transition difficulties when adjusting back into the civilian world, plus financial, family, housing, and employment issues.

The campaign was developed with local veterans from across the Hull and East Riding area, and aim to encourage open conversations, challenge stereotypes and reduce stigma.

It aims to show that a range of support is available in Hull and East Yorkshire for veterans and their families, and that hope and recovery are possible.

Councillor Linda Tock, Hull City Council’s Veterans and Armed Forces Champion, said: “We proudly mark the sacrifices made by our veterans at this time of year, where we remember those no longer with us but also recognise the brave men and women in our communities who have defended our country.

“It is hard to imagine the things that our forces personnel have seen and experienced, and it is vitally important that they know that support is available for them and their loved ones.

“They don’t need to suffer in silence, and we hope that this campaign can lead to veterans coming forward to seek the help they may need.”

Councillor Liam Dealtry, East Riding of Yorkshire Council Armed Forces Members Champion said: “We are proud to honour the service of our veterans and recognise their commitment.

“This is a fantastic initiative, and we hope to reassure veterans that help is available, and encourage anyone in need to seek the support that can make a difference.”
