Ferens Art Gallery are seeking stories from former Future Ferens members ahead of their 20th anniversary celebrations.
As the Ferens celebrates 100 years since the gallery first opened its doors in 2027, it will also mark 20 years of Future Ferens, the gallery’s youth engagement programme.
The programme brings together young people aged 18-25 to explore art, culture and creativity while developing valuable skills, confidence and experience. Over the past 20 years, members have helped shape exhibitions, events and visitor experiences, worked alongside artists and gallery staff and contributed their own ideas and perspectives to the gallery’s programme. For many participants, Future Ferens has provided a pathway into further education, creative careers and lifelong engagement with arts and culture.
To mark these landmark anniversaries, those that have been part of the Future Ferens over the last two decades are being to share their experiences and tell us what being involved meant to them.
From developing creative skills and confidence, to shaping educational and career journeys, Future Ferens has played an important role in the lives of hundreds of young people. The team at Ferens would love to hear how members time with the group has impacted their personal or professional development, and what memories have stayed with them over the years.
Cllr Jackie Dad, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: “Ferens Art Gallery is incredibly proud to have had the privilege of working alongside so many talented, passionate and inspiring young people since the programme began.
“As we reflect on the achievements of the past 20 years, we want to celebrate the voices and stories of the people who made Future Ferens what it is today.”
David Alcock, Hull Museums and Gallery Learning Manager, said: “For 20 years, Future Ferens has been a space where young people have been able to explore their creativity, build confidence and make their voices heard. The ideas, energy and enthusiasm of our members have helped shape the gallery in countless ways.
“As we approach this special anniversary, we’d love to reconnect with former members, celebrate their achievements and hear about the impact Future Ferens has had on their lives.”
Past members can share their stories by completing a survey or can email FutureFerens.FutureFerens@hcandl.co.uk.
David continued: “The feedback we receive will play a vital role in helping us demonstrate the value and impact of Future Ferens. Your stories will help us advocate for the continued support and development of the programme, ensuring that future generations of young people can benefit from opportunities to engage with art, culture and creativity for many years to come.
“Whether you were involved recently or were one of the very first members, we’d love to hear from you. We can’t wait to hear your stories.”
