Meet the volunteers helping to shape housing services in Hull

For Volunteers’ Week 2026, running from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 June, we’re putting the spotlight on our valued tenant and resident volunteers.

Michael, Dawn and Craig are just a few of the Hull City Council tenants who represent their communities on the Hull Tenants’ Forum. They bring vital insights to the Council’s Neighbourhoods and Housing service, sharing opinions, giving views on proposed changes, and helping to improve services for all tenants.

While some volunteers devote a lot of their time to their roles, there are many opportunities that fit around working hours and family commitments.

Tenant volunteer activities are many and varied. Here are a few examples:

  • Shaping the way services are run, such as caretaking, cleaning of communal areas in blocks, customer service call handling
  • Being involved with fire safety at the design stage, giving feedback on proposed fittings and systems
  • Test-driving digital services
  • Contributing to the tenants’ web page and quarterly newsletter, Hull Housing News
  • Serving as Neighbourhood and Block Champions who carry out patch walks in their neighbourhoods, or inspections in their blocks of flats
  • Building community links and tackling loneliness with drop-in sessions and activities

At Hull City Council we’re nationally recognised for the way we work with tenants and residents to improve housing services. We could not do this without the efforts and commitment of volunteers. So for Volunteers’ Week, we’d like to give a big thank-you to all our volunteers, past and present.
