With warmer weather on the way, this is a good time for residents to check their window safety restrictors are working properly.
Window restrictors are an important safety feature designed to help prevent accidental falls, particularly for children and vulnerable people living in upper-floor properties.
Opening windows above ground-floor level should be fitted with restrictors that stop them opening too wide. When engaged, they should usually limit the opening to around 10cm – about the width of a standard coffee mug.
There are different types of restrictors fitted to different windows, but they are often located inside the window frame and may include a button or release marked “press to open”. These allow adults to fully open windows when necessary for cleaning or ventilation.
It’s simple to carry out a quick visual check, as shown in the picture. If a window above ground floor level:
- does not have a restrictor fitted
- opens wider than 10cm when the restrictor is engaged
- has a loose or damaged restrictor
please report it so that an inspection and any necessary repairs can be arranged.
