Following National Garden Week, a Tenant Participation Officer recently visited one of Hull’s local tenants who is proudly showcasing an award‑winning garden.
Barbara Hargrave, aged 89, is a well‑known and respected member of the community and has more than 50 years of gardening experience. Recently, Barbara has been generously donating cuttings from her prize‑winning Prince of Darkness hydrangea to several Tenants and Residents Associations across the city, supporting community groups to enhance and maintain their shared garden spaces.

Barbara’s passion for gardening extends beyond her own celebrated garden. When she is not tending to her plants, she regularly supports local colleges by educating students in the art of garden growing and maintenance, helping to pass on valuable skills and knowledge to future generations.
Hull City Council is proud to recognise tenants like Barbara, whose dedication and generosity help make neighbourhoods greener, more welcoming places to live and encourage stronger community connections.
If you are a Hull City Council tenant with a garden worth showing off, why not enter our garden competition?
