Five Hull theatre makers are taking over at Edinburgh Fringe as the world’s largest arts festival gets under way.
With support from Hull Truck Theatre, Absolutely Cultured and Back To Ours, the local contingent is taking five exciting shows, all of which were seen for the first time right here in Hull.

The Roaring Girls, Beach Body Ready
Fierce, feminist and fun, Beach Body Ready is a radically joyful show based on the performers’ own bodies and experiences. Funny, moving and an accessible look at big subjects, Beach Body Ready is for everyone who has ever felt uncomfortable with the things society and mainstream media have to say about women’s bodies. Sarah, Jess and Rachael will be performing Beach Body Ready throughout Fringe (31 July to 26 August), at the Pleasance Courtyard. Book here.
The Herd, Slime
Kids need theatre too! Slime is an interactive, fully immersive story for five-and-unders about a slug, a caterpillar and a quest to find a leaf! Squishy, Squelchy and completely hilarious, Slime is unique, accessible and colourful. The Herd are a Hull Libraries Associate Theatre Company and have been performing Slime in Hull libraries. Catch the show at Pleasance Pop-Up, Central Library on selected dates throughout Fringe.
Middle Child, The Canary and the Crow
Hull’s Middle Child theatre company takes brand new grime- and cello-driven gig theatre The Canary and the Crow to the festival, following an inaugural two nights at Hull Truck. The lyrical, semi-autobiographical story from writer and performer Daniel Ward blends grime, hip hop and theatre to bring to life its protagonist’s experience as a working class black kid accepted to a prestigious grammar school. Just Club, Standing too Close on our Own in the Dark
A vibrant, hopeful and melancholic gig-theatre event, Standing too Close on our Own in the Dark is part stand-up, part gig and part spoken word ramble, which sees its performer pour over a journal of original poetry and comedic monologue, with encouragement from a live band. It’s only in Edinburgh for one stand-alone performance at the Roundabout on Monday August 19. Book here.
Casus Circus, DNA
Commissioned by Back to Ours, Casus Circus will perform their ballet of acrobatics for the Edinburgh audiences. DNA is a show of physical theatre in which the acrobats explore, wrestle and nurture their real-life stories. Performing through an array of emotional, humorous and dangerously skilful moments, the Casus Circus acrobats fill the stage with momentum and stillness, strength and fragility.
