Hull’s Virtual School hosted a celebration event to recognise the children and young people they help to support.

It was hosted in partnership with the Children’s University and took place on Thursday 22 October at the Hilton Hotel, Hull.

Hull’s Virtual School supports and advises all those involved in the education of children in care, children who have previously been in care and children with a social worker.

Their goal is to raise the educational achievement of all vulnerable young people in Hull and help close the attainment gap.

The event was organised to celebrate and reward the achievements of the children and young people who receive support from the Virtual School.

Young people and their carers were invited as special guests through a Golden Ticket invitation. Many other partner organisations and staff from across the council were also in attendance.

Guest speaker BBC Radio Humberside presenter Kofi Smiles provided guests with an inspiring closing speech at the end of the night.

The event provided the opportunity for young people, their carers and families, as well as professionals, to come together to celebrate achievement, recognise effort and participation, and acknowledge success and aspiration.

This event builds upon the ongoing work of the Virtual School and Children’s University to encourage participation, learning and personal development.

The event was the chance to celebrate achievement, effort and participation.

Councillor Linda Tock, the portfolio holder for Children’s Services at Hull City Council, said: “Our community plan sets out our ambition for Hull children of all backgrounds to have the best start in life.

“This means ensuring all children are offered good learning opportunities, a chance to have their talent nurtured and raise their aspirations.

“This wonderful event demonstrates the council’s commitment to this ambition. By recognising success and encouraging participation in learning opportunities beyond the classroom, it helps build young people’s confidence, resilience and ambition.

“We are committed to continue working in partnership with families, schools and our other partners to improve life chances and help all young people in Hull reach their full potential.”

Kofi Smiles, BBC Radio Humberside presenter and guest speaker, said: “I was buzzing for the celebration because it’s a chance to shine a light on some incredible young people and recognise their achievements.

“It’s so important that they have an opportunity to feel proud of themselves and celebrate how far they’ve come. Knowing everything they’ve done, now’s the time not to lose sight! Got to keep eyes wide and bright and look ahead to all the possibilities in front of them.

“I was proper chuffed to be invited and to celebrate with everyone and hopefully give them a bit of encouragement along the way.”
