Hull City Council is once again appealing for residents to donate unwanted children’s Christmas jumpers, to support local families and reduce textile waste.
The council’s annual Christmas jumper donation drive launched on Friday 23 October, encouraging residents to spread some festive cheer by giving pre-loved children’s festive jumpers a second life.
Over the last few years, the scheme has gone from strength to strength, with a record-breaking 145 jumpers collected last year.
For many families, Christmas is an added financial pressure, and this jumper collection is designed to help ensure all children can take part in the festive celebrations.
All jumpers donated will be sorted and distributed just in time for Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day on Thursday 10 December, when people up and down the country come together and donate £2 to “make the world better with a sweater”.
Donation drop-off points include:
- The Wilson Centre
- The Orchard Centre
- Bransholme Library
- Beercocks estate agents on Holderness Road and Village Green Way in Hull, as well as the branches in Hedon, and Cottingham.
KWL, Reckitt and the Department of Work and Pensions are also supporting the campaign, with staff able to donate unwanted Christmas jumpers at designated collection points within their workplaces.
The deadline for donations is Tuesday 1 December.
Councillor Charles Quinn, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, said: “Last year, residents donated a record-breaking 145 jumpers, helping children across the city join in the fun of Christmas Jumper Day. This year, we would love to build on that success and collect more jumpers than ever before.
“If your child has a Christmas jumper they’ve outgrown, donating it could make a real difference to a local family, ensuring every child can enjoy the Christmas Jumper Day festivities.
“I’d like to thank everyone who donates and helps spread a little festive kindness across our city.”
However, textile recycling isn’t just at Christmas, it is a year-round activity.
There are lots of opportunities in Hull to recycle textiles, such as at the household waste and recycling centres, via the council’s textile points – which are located across the city – or donating to local charity shops.
Remember, keep textiles out of household waste bins.
