Gas Safety Week (12-20 September 2026) is a national reminder of the importance of keeping our homes safe with regular checks by Gas Safe registered engineers.
Hull City Council works in partnership with Kingstown Works Limited (KWL) to make appointments with all council tenants once a year for these checks. Thank you to everyone who keeps their appointments – almost every council tenant in the city.
By law, we need to carry out a gas safety check in every council home each year, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.
What do we, as a landlord, need to do?
- Gas pipework, flues and appliances that we provide for your use must be maintained in a safe condition.
- All gas appliances and flues that we provide for your use must be safety checked every year.
- We must provide you with a copy of the Gas Safety Record within 28 days of completing the check, or to any new tenant before they move in. Tenants can report landlords to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for not providing this record.
- We must keep a copy of the Gas Safety Record until two further checks have taken place.
- We must make sure that maintenance and annual safety checks are carried out by a qualified Gas Safe registered engineer. You can check if an engineer is registered and what they are qualified to work on by visiting the Gas Safe Register website. As an extra safety tip – check the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card when they arrive at your home.
- We must make sure that all gas equipment, including any appliance left by a previous tenant, is safe or removed before the home is re-let to another tenant.
- A carbon monoxide alarm must be fitted in every habitable room of a home that contains gas appliances, excluding appliances used only for cooking. As a landlord, we need to check and test that carbon monoxide alarms in every home are working on the day any new tenancy begins.
Before buying a CO alarm, make sure it complies with Standard EN 50291 and carries an approval mark, such as a Kitemark. Check the manufacturer’s recommendations about how you should fit and test your alarm to ensure that it’s in good working condition.
