Rent payment problems? Don’t struggle alone

Summer is an expensive time for many people, especially those with children, caring commitments or family travel costs.

As your landlord, Hull City Council is here to help and support you with housing rent payments. Alternatively, Citizens Advice and Shelter can provide you with independent information and advice about how to tackle rent arrears.

If you are struggling to pay your rent, or have fallen into arrears, it’s important to get help and advice as early as possible. You will need to talk to your landlord as soon as you can.

If you are a Hull City Council tenant and are struggling financially or are unable to pay your rent, you should contact your Tenancy Officer immediately. Do not ignore the problem. We are here to help and support you. You can find information on our website: www.hull.gov.uk/ struggling.

Benefits deductions

If you owe four weeks’ rent or more, you can ask to have money deducted from various benefits. These include Income Support benefit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, and income-based Employment and Support Allowance.

Your Tenancy Officer can request this on your behalf. You can contact your Tenancy Officer via our online form here.

Housing Payment

If you already have help with your rent but are still unable to pay, you can apply for a temporary Housing Payment to assist you.

Direct payment from UC

For ongoing rent payments, you can request to have your rent paid direct from Universal Credit. A lot of people find this helpful, as it means there is no risk of forgetting to pay their rent.
