Young rappers catch the Beats Bus

Children and young people used their creative skills to rap about life on Orchard Park when Beats Bus paid a visit.

Beats Bus, an organisation that uses music, dance, graffiti art and DJ workshops to inspire young people in Hull to express themselves and build confidence, attended the estate’s Shaw Park.

Families from the area attended the event, which also involved friendly representatives from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Humberside Police and Parks AFC, the children’s football club which plays at Shaw Park.

St Michael’s Youth Project was there, too, keeping over 100 children fuelled with healthy snack packs, while Councillor Rosie Nicola took the opportunity to chat with local families.

As part of the session, the Beats Bus team talked with young people to discuss life on Orchard Park. The children then worked with the tutors to write and perform a rap based on the views, experiences and stories they’d shared.

The event was well attended and the result of a continuing partnership between the organisations involved. Parks AFC, who donated play equipment to St Michael’s as part of the partnership, also volunteered to make sure grassed areas were clean and tidy, helping to prepare the space for the event.

Beats Bus will return on Sunday 13 September 2026, from 1-3pm.
