1970s vintage photos sought for Hull Museums

Hull Museums are on the hunt for photos of Hull and its residents in the 1970s.

In a new exhibition opening Thursday 10 July at the Streetlife Museum, the team is looking for residents to share their memories and photographs of themselves and the city fifty years ago.

Glam and Gloom: 1970’s Britain will explore the highs and hardships of life in the 1970s. From seemingly endless strikes and power cuts, to rising standards of living, holidaying on the Costa del Sol, glam rock and glitter pop and some of the greatest British TV of all time.

The exhibition has been designed by curator, Dr Gerardine Mulcahy-Parker, and will feature life in 1970s Hull alongside the national stories of the decade.

As part of this exciting new exhibition, the museum is now looking for Hull’s photographic memories of the 1970s to share with visitors – whether it’s days out, a special occasion, work, school, or everyday life.

The photos will go on display in a digital projection in the exhibition alongside memorabilia, games and fashions from the era.

Hull Museums Programme Manager, Sarah Howard, said: “As a child of the 70s myself I’m excited to see the public contributions come in. The great thing about showing them digitally is that we can include so many! So get digging for those family photos from holidays on the east coast or your fun at Hull Fair – we promise not to laugh at the flares.”

People can send photos in via the Hull Museum’s Facebook page or email them to Museums@hcandl.co.uk.

Glam and Gloom: 1970s Britain will be on display at the Streetlife Museum from 10 July-31 August.
