Christmas bin collection dates and recycling centre opening times

Hull City Council is reminding residents to check their bin collection days over the festive period.

Due to the bank holidays over Christmas and New Year, there will be changes to the usual collection schedule.

Hull residents can check their collection days at any time via the online bin collection day checker or on the 2024-25 calendars included in the recycling packs recently sent to every household in the city.

Councillor Charles Quinn, Portfolio Holder for environment, said: “Bin collections over Christmas and New Year are slightly different, so to ensure bins are emptied, everyone should check their calendars to make sure they put their bins out on the right days.”

The changes to the collection schedule are as follows:

The council is also encouraging people to remember to recycle correctly over the festive period, a time when household waste increases by about a third.

Cllr Quinn said: “With all the extra packaging from presents, cards, wrapping paper and food, we all produce a lot more household waste over the festive period.

“Most of this can be recycled, so this Christmas we are asking everyone to take extra care to make sure their waste goes in the right bin.”

Any excess waste can be taken to one of the city’s three household waste and recycling centres (HWRC) where many unwanted items can also be donated for sale in Reuse shops.

Real Christmas trees can be recycled by being chopped up and put in the brown bin, or taken whole to your nearest HWRC at Burma Drive, Sutton Fields and Wiltshire Road.

Hull’s household waste and recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and will be open from 10am to 4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

At all other times, the centres are open from 10am to 5pm, seven days a week.
