Hull Christmas Lights at Hull City Hall

Hull set to sparkle as Christmas lights are switched on by Super League Man of Steel

Hull’s stunning Christmas lights will be switched on next week by the city’s very own rugby league star and 2024 Steve Prescott (MBE) Man of Steel, Mikey Lewis.

Hull KR half-back Mikey will join the Lord Mayor Councillor Mark Collinson and a special guest direct from the North Pole to get the festive period underway.

On Thursday 21 November, Queen Victoria Square will come alive with stunning light and sound installations, with thousands expected to join the crowd.

Entertainment will get under way at 5.30pm, with DJ Darren Lethem taking the reigns as host on Hull City Hall balcony to introduce a host of live performers from State of the Arts Academy.

Mikey, Lord Mayor and Father Christmas will switch on the lights at 6.45pm, complete with a firework display (weather dependent) over Queen Victoria Square.

Lord Mayor, Cllr Mark Collinson, said: “This event signals the start of the festive season in Hull and always draws a fantastic crowd.

“I’m really looking forward to joining our special guests and being part of what promises to be a great night.”

At the centre of the event, a 50ft Norwegian Spruce, sponsored by KWL, will be lit for the first time, following its arrival into Queen Victoria Square on Friday 15 November.

The event kicks off the festive season in Hull with Christmas markets in the city centre every weekend starting Saturday 23 November until Saturday 21 December.

For those wanting to avoid the hassle of finding a parking space, East Yorkshire and Stagecoach buses provide regular services from across the city and, with the Government-funded fare cap, a single journey costs just £2.

Anyone travelling with family and friends can save over £10 by purchasing a Hull Card Group ticket for up to six people of any age, for just £13.80, which provides unlimited travel on both operators’ services.

Those attending the Christmas lights switch on from outside the city, can also use the Priory Park & Ride service, which will be running buses every 20 minutes from 6.20-9pm on Thursday nights, starting 21 November. It includes free parking and a discounted £1 return fare when purchased at the park & ride site.
