Chess enthusiasts could soon be able to showcase their tactical skills as plans to install equipment in two Hull parks have been revealed.
Two new chess tables, each with fixed seats, will be coming soon thanks to the Levelling Up Parks Fund which has allocated £5,000 to Hull City Council.
To enable residents to access these resources on both sides of the city, the Pearson Park Trust Sub-Committee are being consulted around a potential location in Pearson Park, whilst consideration is also being given to a further site in East Park.
Once sites have been found, further discussions will be conducted with trustees, friends groups and local residents.
The facilities would provide free, inclusive activities for all backgrounds and chess is a great way to support emotional health and wellbeing.
Other benefits include increasing hand-eye co-ordination and improving analytical problem solving, concentration and focus.
Following previous support from the Levelling Up Parks Fund for other developments in the city, the council was invited to submit an expression of interest for the chess tables as part of the government’s package of measures to support children attending schools in disadvantaged areas to learn and play the game.
The aim is also to help improve visibility and availability of the game and fund elite playing.
Cllr Jack Haines, the council’s portfolio holder for communities, said: “This is a brilliant initiative and it’s pleasing that the council is looking to bring this to the city.
“Our parks are extremely popular with residents and visitors alike and adding further attractions such as chess facilities will only help increase footfall and socialising.
“Chess is a game that anyone from any background can play and one that can provide hours of entertainment and competition.”
Residents are invited to give their thoughts and find out more information at drop-in sessions from 12:30-3pm on Thursday 23 November at East Park’s Animal Education Centre and from 1-3pm on Friday 24 November at Pearson Park’s Bowls Pavilion.
Graham Chesters, president of Hull and East Riding Chess Association (HERCA), added: “As president of HERCA, the news that Hull had been awarded a grant to install chess tables in two of its parks is tremendously welcome.
“HERCA has run Play Chess Festivals for the past three summers and we know from experience how playing chess in parks really works.
“The number of chess players is growing every year – it’s a cool thing to do! Having all you need for a game in Hull’s beautiful parks all year round is a great development!”
