Annual air raid service to take place

Hull will once again pause to remember those lost during the Second World War as the annual Citizens Air Raid Memorial Service will take place next month.

The service commemorates all civilian life lost, as well as paying tribute to emergency service personnel.

It particularly honours the hundreds of people who died during heavy bombing between 7 and 9 May 1941.

82 major air attacks took place in Hull between 1939 and 1945, with over 1,200 people killed.

This year’s service will be held on Tuesday 6 May at the Memorial Cenotaph within Northern Cemetery, starting at 2pm.

The Reverend Vicky Earll will lead the service, which is open to all.

Attendees can also visit the Cemetery’s memorial and remembrance area, which was completed in 2023 to commemorate the 300-plus men, women and children buried in unmarked mass graves there.

The feature also honours the volunteers who came forward to help emergency services.
