Warning issued to manage waste responsibly following environmental prosecutions

Hull City Council is urging property owners and occupiers to maintain the cleanliness of their land, to avoid facing prosecution.

This warning comes after a property owner and two property occupiers were prosecuted this month (March) by the Council under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, for failing to deal with the condition of their property.

In both cases, action was taken by Hull City Council’s environmental enforcement officers, in response to complaints from members of the public.

The details of the two prosecutions are as follows:

  • Ademi Holdings Limited of Princes Road, Hull, who failed to attend Hull Magistrates’ Court were convicted in their absence of an offence, contrary to section 80 Environmental Protection Act 1990 and were instructed to pay fines and costs totalling £988.
  • Mr Darren Alexander Webber and Miss Sophie Burden of Ceylon Street, Hull, who failed to attend Hull Magistrates’ Court were both convicted in their absence to an offence, contrary to section 80 Environmental Protection Act 1990 and were instructed to pay fines and costs totalling  £798.

Doug Sharp, Head of Street Cleansing and Waste Management at Hull City Council, said: “As a council, we will always listen and respond to complaints from the public about environmental crimes.

“Occupiers and property owners must take responsibility for any waste on their land as it can blight the neighbourhood, is unfair on other residents and the council will ensure there are consequences for failing to do so.”

Hull City Council continues to urge residents to dispose of or recycle their household waste through approved services – including any of the city’s waste and recycling centres, household collection schemes, and bulky household collection services.
