Park Street in Hull is closed to motorists heading north from Anlaby Road, after a sinkhole appeared.
A highways team is currently on site assessing the damage.
As a result of the evaluation, a full road closure may need to be implemented for the safety of motorists.
The closure stretches from Anlaby Road to Londesborough Street only, and access to Tesco is still maintained.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment and regeneration, said: “Due to the nature of the concrete failure, an emergency road closure is required so that an investigation can take place.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and ask that motorists are patient.”
