Hull City Council is calling on the people of Hull to come forward and consider fostering as part of a major awareness drive for this upcoming Foster Care Fortnight (13–26 May 2025).
With one of the highest populations of looked-after children in the country, Hull urgently needs more foster carers to keep children safe, supported and close to the city they call home.
The campaign – in partnership with national charity The Fostering Network – will see Hull Fostering raising the roof across the city with powerful real-life stories, behind-the-scenes access to fostering teams, and community outreach across local events and social media.
This year’s theme, “The Power of Relationships”, shines a light on the everyday magic of fostering – from the small wins to the life-changing milestones. Hull City Council is proudly using this national moment to rally the city and showcase how fostering can fit into everyday lives, including those who work full-time.
As part of this commitment, Hull City Council is proud to be a Fostering Friendly Employer, offering five additional days of paid leave per year to staff who foster. This allows employees the flexibility to attend training, support a new child, or fulfil the responsibilities that come with being a foster carer — without sacrificing their career progression.
With over 700 children currently in care, the city urgently needs foster carers of all kinds – from those who can offer long-term care to those who can provide a bed for one weekend a month. Every carer matters.
Fostering is open to single people, couples, those with children, renters, and homeowners alike. All that’s needed is a spare room, time, and a willingness to care. Hull Fostering offers full training, wraparound support, and competitive financial allowances to help foster carers thrive.
Councillor Linda Tock, the portfolio holder for Children’s Services at Hull City Council, said: “We don’t just talk about putting children first — we live it,”.
“Fostering is at the very heart of the fabric of Hull. It’s about local people stepping up for local children — and as a council, we’re proud to stand beside our staff and residents to make that possible.”
“If you have ever thought about fostering, now is the time to act. Let’s raise the roof for children who deserve to stay in the city they know and love.”
