Hull City Council is seeking a contractor to deliver two roundabout improvement schemes, at Ennerdale Leisure Centre and Wawne Road / Bude Road, as part of the Kingswood Area Action Plan (AAP).
The schemes will:
- provide additional road space for vehicles and prepare the area for the future and any new development
- improve cycle and pedestrian facilities to support people to walk and ride more
- provide new signalised cycle and pedestrian crossing points to improve safety
- see the management of trees in the area, some of which are proposed to be taken up and replanted. Where this cannot be accommodated, twice as many replacement trees will be planted to improve the local landscape.
It is anticipated that a contractor will be appointed in November, with the aim of starting on site in January 2026.
Following engagement with residents, businesses and communities during the summer, the scheme plans that have gone out to tender saw some minor revisions based on local feedback, including:
- modification to advance lane direction signs to assist drivers with positioning in the correct lane for their destination
- an increase to the width of the brand-new cycleway link between the Ennerdale Leisure Centre roundabout and Littondale.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, said: “Following the engagement work we did over the summer, we have listened to what residents and other stakeholders have said and we have now prepared a scheme that meets the needs of all members of the travelling public, which they can use safely and securely whatever form of transport they choose.
“With traffic levels and the population expected to grow in the coming years, these roundabout schemes are part of a proactive and planned approach by the council to futureproof our city’s infrastructure.
“We have already completed works to the Wawne Road / Kesteven Way roundabout to provide additional highway capacity as well as improve walking and cycling routes and we will now do the same at the Ennerdale Leisure Centre and Wawne Road / Bude Road roundabouts.”
