Two popular Hull festivals have joined forces to bring four spectacular circus shows to the city.
The expanded five-day Freedom Festival will include the quartet of quirky performances after a team-up with Back to Ours.
Circa will open the festival with its acrobatic show Humans.
Un Poyo Rojo, a contemporary Argentinian physical theatre performance, will fuse acrobatics, dance and physical performance.
UduL by Los Galindos promises to be a visceral performance delivered with Catalan humour.
And the return of Danny Ronaldo – back in Hull following his performance at Freedom Festival 2012 – brings the unusual, comical solo performance Fidelis Fortibus.
The two organisations are aiming to build on what they have identified as a growing appetite for the art form in the city.
Freedom Festival Arts Trust artistic director and joint chief executive Mikey Martins said: “Hull has a rich history of circus, which has been widely celebrated at Freedom Festival and in communities across the city through Back to Ours.
“It is an incredibly accessible art form that can easily transport people back to their childhood and a world of possibility through jaw-dropping and breath-taking acrobatics, demonstrating the sheer brilliance and potential of the human body. With the reactions we have had from audiences, we want to do justice to this appetite for circus.”
Back to Ours director Louise Yates said: “Working alongside such an established and iconic event makes absolute sense for us. There is so much we can learn. We’re both programming circus so we thought ‘what would happen if we put our experience together and created something deeper and longer-lasting?’.”
Freedom Festival 2019 takes place from Wednesday 28 August to Saturday 1 September in Hull city centre. Find times, venues and ticket details here.
