Middle Child Premiere Their New Show ‘Modest’

Local theatre company Middle Child premiere their latest show at Hull Truck this week. ‘Modest’ telling the story of trailblazing Victorian artist Elizabeth Thompson.

Music hall, theatre and drag king swagger collide as Modest brings you Elizabeth Thompson – megastar of the Victorian art scene. Featuring some of the UK’s hottest drag talent, the new play will break your heart and start a revolution.

We met with lead actress Emer Dineen at Ferens Art Gallery to find out more:

“I’ve come to the Ferens to see her painting, ‘The Return from Inkerman’, which is part of the permanent collection here at the Ferens Gallery.”

“Modest is a play about Elizabeth Thompson. Elizabeth created huge war paintings, which was unheard of for any female artists, or any artist, of her time.”

“She became an overnight sensation, with people calling for her election to the Royal Academy much to the dismay of the other royal academicians at the time.”

“So, ‘Modest’ is about her struggle not with getting into the Royal Academy, but also acclimatising to this level of fame and celebrity as a female artist at the time.”

Celebrating national Fostering Fortnight in Hull

This month (15^th-28^th May), Hull City Council will be celebrating national Fostering Fortnight.

There is a national shortage of foster carers and Hull is no different. The council is calling on more potential people to consider joining its fostering community to provide safe and loving homes to children and young people in care.

Speaking about her experiences of fostering with Hull Fostering, foster carer Nora said;

“We started fostering in December 2014. I remember sitting upstairs in Kenworthy House, quite nervously but excited, waiting to see if we’d passed our panel. The process was a lot easier than we thought but very thorough.”

“I remember when I was at school, there were a couple of key people in my life that really made a difference to me, and I think that’s where that desire comes from. I never knew anything about foster carers growing up.”

“If I had to describe fostering, I would say, other than raising my own children, it’s the most rewarding thing I’ve done. I would say most fostering households, including ours, you get a mix of love, laughter, tears sometimes, some days are good, some days are a bit tougher than others. But by far it is something worth doing.”

“It, and this may sound a little strange, it makes your heart smile. That’s the only way I can describe it, it’s just an amazing thing to do.”

Work Begins on Lost Trawlermen Memorial

Work to create a lost trawlermen memorial to remember those who lost their lives at sea has got underway. The memorial at St. Andrews Quay has been commissioned by local fishing heritage group STAND.

It is thought that over 6000 trawlermen were lost at sea in the city’s fishing industry.

Speaking at the lost trawlermen memorial garden site, Cllr Mike Ross said;

“It’s really fantastic to see this work after many years finally getting underway. I’m sure when it’s finished it’ll be a fitting memorial for all those lost at sea.”

“Hull as a city, built on the water, and built on the sea, has what built it to the city it is today. So, it’s only right that actually the city does remember all those that lost their lives at sea.”

“We believe there was between six and eight thousand men lost over the years at sea. The work to get this memorial here in place is a fitting tribute to all those and I look forward to seeing it open later this year.”

Vic Wheeldon, committee member of STAND, said;

“Over the 150 years that the fishing industry worked from Hull, in excess of 6000 men were lost.

“Some of them of course in wartime, but many of them in peace time just pursuing a profession. It’s very important that they should be remembered and recognized.”

“There’s never been a single place where you could go to think about family members that were lost at sea. The number of fishermen that were actually in the profession at the time are dwindling away. But the extended families are fully aware that this profession was part of Hull.

“It’s taught about in the schools now thankfully and they they’ve got a place to come and reflect as well.”

Hull Local Offer hosts opportunity marketplace for young people

This week, Hull City Council hosted an event at the Guildhall, in partnership with Hull Local Offer, to provide opportunities for local young people in the city.

The local service provides information, support and guidance to young people with special educational needs or disabilities living in in the city.

The marketplace style event for young people with an EHCP (education, health and care plans) and their families presented those are starting to think about transition options for post-16 learning opportunities.

Speaking at the event yesterday, Fiona Arnott, Transition Manager at Hull City Council told us more:

“It’s a preparation for adulthood and post-16 options event for young people from Hull with education, health and care plans.”

“We’ve also got a range of different providers here today – education and training providers, as well as agencies supporting young people with transition.”

Exploring Ancestry With Liminal Creative

An exciting new exhibition ‘Rediscovering Ferens’ has opened at Ferens Art Gallery, curated by local artist Louise Cole from Liminal Creative.

The exhibition focusses on the theme of identity and curators have explored what identity means to them, and to communities in Hull.

We caught up with Creative Producer Louise Cole to find out more:

“We’re re-presenting ‘Sirens’, which was commissioned by Freedom Festival arts trust and presented as part of the festival last summer.”

“The new piece of work is called ‘Expansion of Existence’ and is all about my heritage and ancestry. My aunt has done the most incredible family history research and found me some incredible stories to gain inspiration from.”

“The interconnectedness of humanity and how we all contain the same matter that was present at the big bang. I just find that such an amazing thing to think about.”

“The piece is made up of seven spheres of different sizes, almost like planets. One of my ancestors was a suffragette so I’ve got the colours of the suffragette flag.”

“It features a hundred names of the women going back to the 1670s. Some of the stories are also in spoken word which is motion triggered.”

‘Sirens’ runs until 26 April and ‘Expansion of Existence’ is on until 21 May. You can also meet Liminal Creative in Ferens Gallery every Wednesday, 11am-1pm to talk about the work.

Countdown to local elections begins

Matt Jukes, Hull City Council Chief Executive and elections Returning Officer, has published the Notice of Local Elections in the Guildhall. The pre-election period is now underway, running until the close of polls at 10pm on Thursday 4 May.

There are local elections in 19 of Hull’s 21 wards, Bricknell and University wards do not have elections this year.

Speaking about the elections, Matt Jukes said; “There are three ways you can cast your vote. You can cast your vote in person at one of our polling stations and be notified of your polling station when you receive your polling card closer to election day.

“You can also vote by post. If you contact our election services team by phone, by post or by email – we can make those arrangements for you.”

“Or you can vote by proxy. If you’re unable to vote on the day, you can nominate somebody to vote on your behalf.

“Voting in Local Elections is extremely important. It’s your opportunity to have your say on who represents you in making important decisions that affect your day-to-day lives.”

“So, I strongly encourage you all to play your part and make sure you vote in the Local Elections.”

Why you should consider becoming a social worker

For Social Work Week 2023, Anna from Hull City Council chatted about why she became a social worker and why it’s such a rewarding career.

Speaking about her experience as a Social Worker, Anna said; “I’ve always had a desire to help people and support people when they’re in times of need.”

“My family have had some struggles personally with family members struggling with substance misuse. I’ve seen first-hand how that’s impacted myself and the wider family.”

“We didn’t have much support and I feel like there’s a lot of families in similar positions when they do need support and that’s what inspired me to want to go into social work.”

“I think campaigns like this are really important to promote what social work actually is. I think there’s a lot of common misconceptions and a negative stigma about social workers.”

“Campaigns like this are important to get the word out that we are here to help and here to support.”

“By telling my story about what I feel it is really like to be a social worker. I’m hoping that it empowers people to consider the profession or what is a really rewarding career.

“Children’s social work matters to me because I have now worked in this field for three years and I’ve also seen first-hand the difference that we’re able to make children who are in desperate need of support.”

“I’ve seen the positive impacts that we as social workers and wider services have had on those children and families. There’s nothing more rewarding than being able to help children to make sure they’re safe and continue to thrive.”

Explore Ancient Egypt at Ferens Art Gallery this Spring

Kelly Accetta Crowe from The British Museum talks about the new Ancient Egypt exhibition at Ferens Art Gallery.

The exhibition will explore the mystery of ancient Egypt, celebrating two of the greatest discoveries of the last 200 years.

“We really wanted to give an idea of what hieroglyphs were really like in ancient Egypt and how people used them. So, there’s a variety of objects that we wanted to include. Things not only for the King of course, which we were expecting, but also the afterlife, books of the dead and ancestor statues that were really beautiful that people would have had in their homes to remember their ancestors”

“It’s really important for us that we are able to share some of these exhibitions with places around the UK that don’t normally get to necessarily London to see the exhibition itself.

“There are three partner museums that are getting this exhibition and it starts here in Hull, which is very exciting, at the Ferens Art Gallery.”

“It’s a fabulous opportunity for everyone in the area. Especially children who are learning about ancient Egypt in their schools to have an experience of the objects themselves.”

“There are of course ancient Egyptian objects in this area, but we really wouldn’t to be able to bring this narrative, which is one that has been so important this past year and in 2022 because it was the bicentennial of the decipherment of hieroglyphs, so we really wanted to give that out to more people than just in London.”

Councillor Mike Ross on the Community Strategy Survey

Hull City Council has launched a Community Strategy questionnaire that will help shape the future of Hull.

Everyone is invited to have their say on life in the city. What things are like right now, and their hopes for the next 10 years. The responses will develop a Community Strategy for Hull and help shape local priorities for the next decade.

At the launch event in North Point Shopping Centre, Councillor Mike Ross spoke about the Community Strategy:

“We’re here to get the word out that we want the public of Hull to fill in the Community Strategy.”

“We want to hear from the public of Hull. This is about helping shape Hull’s future over the next ten years, and we can only do that if we hear from the people of Hull what they want.”

“It’s really important that we actually do hear directly what the public of Hull want in this city. We want a listening council and that means getting out and listening to what the public of Hull have to say.”

“This is about helping shaping not what just the council does but other organisations across the city do to help move the city forward over the course of the next ten years.”

Hull City Council Launches £1m Love Your Neighbourhood Project

Last week, Hull City Council launched the £1m Love Your Neighbourhood tidy-up project. The programme aims to make streets cleaner and greener and create up to 30 permanent jobs.

At the project’s launch clean-up, Councillor Mike Ross spoke about the Love Your Neighbourhood programme:

“We’re here today, we’re seeing the Love Your Neighbourhood team in action. They’re hitting an area, they are getting it looking cleaner and greener for the residents that live here.”

“This is our commitment to the city, we want to see a cleaner, greener city.”

“Residents of Hull have said that one of their top priorities is how the area looks and feels. This is about investing in local communities to bring them up to scratch, areas that people can feel proud about living in.”

“This will be a case of getting into those areas that need to be given the support they need. So, we really see that investment in terms of tackling issues around the litter, tackling issues around the grass verges.”

“They’ll be tree works, they’ll be all sorts of works improvements to the roads and really helping give that area an uplift to make it look smart again and give area that residents will feel some pride about living in again.”

“We are going to do all we can to help get this city looking clean and green. Really doing everything that we can to do that, which means not a spring clean but other improvement works as well. Fixing broken streetlights, potholes, and all sorts of other work as well – hitting an area once to give it that lift that it needs for the long term.”

Jobs will be available soon via the Hull City Council Employment Hub.

National Apprenticeship Week 2023 – Why You Should Consider An Apprenticeship

Hull Training and Adult Education hosted a ‘Meet The Employers’ event at Hull Central Library last week for National Apprenticeship Week 2023. The event brings together potential apprentices and local businesses.

We spoke to Carol and Theo, both former apprentices, about why you should consider an apprenticeship.

Carol Hull Training and Adult Education said; “The fantastic thing about apprenticeships is that they’re open to any age. So, from 16 to 65 you can do an apprenticeship and upskill within your own company”.

“I’m an ex-apprentice myself, I did the team leading apprenticeship as part of my role. So it’s for any sector, you can do degree apprenticeships, you can do apprenticeships from leaving school. It covers nearly every single industry across that you can think of – there’s usually an apprenticeship that fits”.

“If you was interested in pursuing an apprenticeship you need to be looking on the national apprenticeship website, it’s a government website.”

“Look on our website, the Hull Training and Adult Education website where our vacancies are. Come along to our open events, we have them advertised on our website and on our social media. Give us a ring, email us and we’re open to discussing apprenticeship opportunities with anybody”.

Theo Farrer, a former apprentice said; “I wanted to do an apprenticeship because I still wanted to learn and get a qualification. But I wanted to enter the world of work”.

“Just go for it, even if you’re unsure. If you still want to get a qualification then keep studying or you want to work full time I’d say just go for it”.

“At the end of it you’ll have a qualification. You’ll have those transferable skills that you can take into another job or into another apprenticeship”.

Hull City Council Recruits Mental Health First Aiders

Hull City Council has launched a new policy to support mental health in the workplace. The policy will train employees as Mental Health first aiders, as well as support colleagues in the workplace.

We spoke with Kate Harley, assistant director of Organisation Development and HR at Hull City Council, to find out more.

Hull City Council staff are signing up to support colleagues by becoming accredited Mental Health First Aiders.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised programme designed to raise the profile of mental ill health. They offer expert guidance and training to support mental health, in the workplace and beyond.

Volunteers are also trained to spot the signs of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis.

In the same way as learning physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid (HHFA) teaches how to recognise crucial warning signs of mental ill health and how to also feel confident to guide someone to appropriate support.

With 40 staff members already signed up, we hope to double this number with the new policy to support mental health.
