Following a further inspection of Sculcoates Bridge last week, a decision has been made to limit access to pedestrians only.
Access for pedestrians will be available on the north footpath only, with cyclists having to dismount before crossing the bridge.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, said: “We commissioned a report from a bridge technical specialist who looked at all options for potential repairs, strengthening, refurbishment or replacement.
“We are looking at a realistic option for potentially reopening of this historic bridge.
“Whatever decision we make, progress will not be speedy due to this being a listed structure and having to obtain approval from the relevant authorities every step of the way, but for now, we are restricting access as these options are explored.”
It is important to note that social distancing must be observed when using the footpath, which will be restricted to one person at a time.
Sculcoates Bridge was built in 1874, making it the oldest bridge in Hull. Due to its age, the bridge was not designed to accommodate the sheer volume and types of modern motor vehicles.
A 7.5 tonne weight restriction was imposed on the bridge in 2006, but it has proved extremely difficult to enforce the restriction with some drivers not adhering to the weight restriction.
