Sculcoates Bridge in Chapman Street will remain closed to road traffic until further notice.
The decision comes after an inspection found the condition of the bridge has deteriorated to the point it is no longer able to carry motor vehicles.
While engineering solutions are explored, the Grade II-listed bridge will become a designated pedestrian and cyclist route as part the city’s commitment to encouraging greener forms of travel.
Councillor Daren Hale, portfolio holder for economic investment, regeneration and planning, said: “Sculcoates Bridge was built in 1874, making it the oldest bridge in Hull. Due to its age, the bridge was not designed to accommodate the sheer volume and types of modern motor vehicles.
“A 7.5 tonne weight restriction was imposed on the bridge in 2006, but it has proved extremely difficult to enforce the restriction with some drivers not adhering to the weight restriction.
“As a result of the inspection, we are having to act on the consultant engineer’s advice and have no option but to keep the bridge closed to motor vehicles for the foreseeable future.”
An inspection found that the bridge has “serious and immediate structural concerns” and keeping it closed to motor vehicles is the only viable solution.
Councillor Hale said: “We have ordered a report from a bridge technical specialist who will look at all options for potential repairs, strengthening, refurbishment or replacement.
“In the meantime, we are regrettably having to advise motorists to use alternative routes.”
Motorists are advised to use North Bridge as an alternative route.
