Core samples are being taken from the Three Ships Mural today (Thursday 5 March).
It is part of a range of asbestos and strength tests that are now required following the listing of the mural. The testing has been agreed with Historic England.
It will involve a series of holes, no larger than 100mm in diameter, being drilled into the face of the mural. These holes will then be repaired using original tiles that have previously fallen off the structure.
Hull City Council’s intention has always been to retain the mural as part of the Albion Square Development.
This further testing of the mural is required to fully inform the most suitable course of action in response to the Grade II listing of the mural.
