5 things to do in Hull this weekend

A musical quartet of events begins with a delightfully angsty appearance by a cult favourite band that will be followed by a huge record fair, a show exploring music in film and an award-winning folk musician.

And those missing Christmas can take in a charity panto featuring the city’s BBC broadcasting staff.

Here are 5 things to do in Hull this weekend.

1. Half Man Half Biscuit
The Welly Club
Friday 24 January 7.30pm
£20

Famed for making ill-tempered music with a social conscience, this Birkenhead band formed in the early 1980s “merely as a way of getting through the day”.

Quickly picked up by the angst-ridden youth of the era, their punk-driven, lyrical rants and protests against all things celebrity and fake, became the unofficial anthems of the underground. Get tickets here.

2. Hull Record Fair
Hull Minster
Saturday 25 January 9am
Free

Record dealers from all over the UK unite for this bi-monthly event. Dozens of tables will again stock thousands of vinyl records, including exclusive releases, plus CDs and DVDs.

3. Mother Goose
Hull City Hall
Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 January
£9

BBC Radio Humberside and Look North are back with their 20th year of charity pantomime. A story of a poor, but ugly, Mother Goose who dreams of being rich and beautiful.

A show that promises to delight children of all ages, with profits going to the BBC Children in Need appeal. Get tickets here.

4. Rutter and Carthy Entertain
Hull Truck Theatre
Friday 24 January 7.30pm
£20

Actor and director Barrie Rutter and award-winning folk musician Eliza Carthy join to present an evening of storytelling, poetry and music.

The event will feature tall tales, sea shanties, anecdotes and ballads. Get tickets here.

5. And The Winner Is…
Middleton Hall, The University of Hull
Friday 24 January 6.30pm
£6.60

Following their 2019 celebration of pop icons and the characteristics that define them, the students of Withernsea High School return, again drawing inspiration from movie icons and the soundtracks synonymous with their best-loved films.

Set in the context of a Hollywood awards ceremony, it sees the compere lead audiences on a journey through different eras and genres of film while students take to the stage and dance to some of the most popular songs from contemporary cinema. Get tickets here.
