Hull-born artist Patrick Coyle is bringing a futuristic performance to Ferens Gallery next month
It is part of the gallery’s current contemporary art exhibition, Is This Planet Earth?, that runs until Sunday 28 July.
Coyle’s performance, Kingstupon Hull Stumption, is a guided walking tour of a fictional water-bottling plant, where he will speak a futuristic local language to explain how the people of Hull have adapted.
The artist suggests that in this version of the future, water has become a scarce luxury item due to “radio sewage active tailings” having been detected in the Humber Estuary, which glows a luminescent brown.
Coyle said: “This performance is a way of thinking about our relationship with natural resources through dark humour and experimental writing. Having delivered versions of it in London, Wrexham and Aberystwyth, I can’t wait to rewrite it for the city I know best.”
Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “The thought-provoking Is This Planet Earth? exhibition has been incredibly well-received since opening last month. It’s fantastic that Hull’s very own Patrick Coyle will be adding his performance to the exhibition which features the creativity and talent of so many outstanding artists.”

Coyle’s walking tour will start at 8.30pm and last approximately 45 minutes, starting outside the Ferens Art Gallery. It will be wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
