Hull City Council is supporting National Hate Crime Awareness Week, sending out a message that hate crime won’t be tolerated.
The week, organised by NationalHCAW, takes place from 10-17 October.
People who experience hate crime incidents are being encouraged to report them, both so that victims can access help and support, but to also potentially bring perpetrators to justice.
Hull City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities and Community Safety, Councillor Ted Dolman, said: “There is no place for hate crime in Hull, where we’re committed to building safe and welcoming neighbourhoods.
“No-one should be targeted for hostility or prejudice because of things like their race, religion, disability or sexual orientation.
“Hate crime can take on many forms, including verbal abuse or physical assault.
“It’s really important that these incidents are reported, because it can ultimately make a big difference for the victim and those around them.”
Non-emergency hate crimes and incidents can be reported to Humberside Police.
This can be done by telephoning 101, reporting online, or visiting a local Police station.
Emergency incidents should be reported via 999.
Crimestoppers also offers reporting options, on 0800 555 111, or https://www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
There’s also a developing network of dedicated third party Hate Crime Reporting Centres, where specially trained staff provide compassionate, informed support to anyone making a report.
