Hull City Council has confirmed that improvement works to two roundabouts in Kingswood will continue early into next year as part of the authority’s proactive plan to futureproof the network in the area.
Hessle-based contractor, CR Reynolds Ltd, was appointed to undertake highway capacity works on Ennerdale Leisure Centre and Wawne Road / Bude Road roundabouts earlier this year.
In addition, the schemes were also designed to:
- improve cycle and pedestrian facilities, to support people to walk and ride more
- provide new signalised cycle and pedestrian crossing points to improve safety.
- enhance the area’s landscape, including tree planting and replanting.
Initially, the council anticipated that this work would be complete by the end of this year.
However, due to circumstances outside the council’s control, a combination of delays to utility diversion works and additional utility requirements has contributed to a cumulative impact on the construction schedule.
The council has decided to use this delay to undertake more extensive pavement reconstruction works, particularly at the Wawne Road / Bude Road roundabout, to reduce the need for future works and disruption, as well as additional enhancements to the area’s drainage systems to ensure they can cope with heavier rainfall events, which are becoming more common.
Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “The council appreciates the disappointment of motorists and the travelling public that these works will take longer to complete than initially planned.
“The delays are largely outside of our control, so we absolutely share the frustration and will do all we can to minimise any additional disruption that may be caused.
“Kingswood is a popular and rapidly growing part of the city, so it is extremely important that we as a council invest now to ensure its infrastructure is fit for the future.
“We’d like to sincerely thank residents and businesses for their continued patience and understanding.
“We will continue to work closely with our contractor and with utility providers to get this work completed as soon as possible, ensure traffic management changes are kept to a minimum and that everything possible is done to keep traffic moving.”
It is anticipated that work on both roundabouts will be complete by the end of March 2027.
Preparations are also already underway for the Christmas and New Year period.
Wherever possible, and where it is safe to do so, lane closures will be removed to minimise the impact on traffic over the festive period.

Traffic Management Update – Ennerdale
Ennerdale (north) will re-open to southbound traffic, from 5pm on Friday 18 September, following the completion of works by CityFibre to install and switch on new fibre optic cable.
The road will be open to all traffic in both directions and diversions will be lifted.
Narrow lanes will continue to be in operation on the roundabout and Thomas Clarkson Way, as the council and its contractor continue to progress with the roundabout improvement scheme.
Lane closures northbound and southbound on a section of the A1033 will remain in place.
