This year’s Slavery Remembrance Day will be marked in Hull by a number of events, including the Lord Mayor attending a commemoration at Wilberforce House this Sunday.
Held annually on 23 August, The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is a UNESCO event that explores the legacies of the transatlantic slave trade and its abolition.
The Lord Mayor, Councillor Maria Coward, will join others at the museum’s Mandela Gardens as they come together to remember, educate and discuss issues surrounding slavery, including its historic causes and consequences.
She said: “It is so important that we mark this day in our city, particularly because of our own William Wilberforce and his campaigning against the slave trade.
“It also reminds us that exploitation still exists through modern-day slavery, and that many people worldwide are still victims.”
