The Mitchell Centre has become the latest community centre in Hull to receive an upgrade, allowing it to open its doors again for the first time since 2023.
As Hull City Council completes a long-term investment programme, including new lighting at Edinburgh Street Community Centre, above, and culminating in the re-opening later this year of Spring Bank Community Centre, residents are encouraged to check out how their local community centre can benefit them.
With support from the Vulcan Centre, members old and new are encouraged to use the Mitchell Centre for a range of activities, from youth sessions and coffee mornings to fitness and digital skills.
Thanks to significant investment from Hull City Council, those who run the centre have been able to complete essential infrastructure works, allowing them to bring the building back to life into a space the whole community can be proud of.
Portfolio holder for communities and community safety, Councillor Ted Dolman, said: “I’m so pleased that we’ve been able to help bring the Mitchell Centre back into use for the residents of our city.
“I know a ton of hard work has gone on and that everyone involved really can’t wait to welcome people.
“We know just what an important role in the lives of so many residents that community centres play, which is why we have used Levelling Up Funding and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to invest £1.4million into them over the past 3 years, making a real positive difference to facilities across the city.”
“All of this is part of our Community Plan, where engaging with residents on things like community centres means we’re ensuring that people are having their say about what they want in our city.”
Via funding made available through Hull City Council, the Mitchell Centre has received new windows, lighting and roofing, along with a high efficiency boiler.
Similar upgrades have taken place at other community centres, including Spring Bank Community Centre.
In addition to a new boiler, funding has allowed for works to the kitchen and car park, as well as fencing, which will lead to the re-opening of the centre in the coming months.
