Council leader welcomes German ambassador to the region

Cllr Mike Ross, leader of the council, met with the UK’s ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell.

Ambassador Mitchell was touring the state-of-the-art Siemens Mobility rail factory at Goole on Friday 21 November.

Cllr Ross was one of several delegates who met with the ambassador whose visit was part of a ‘domestic roadshow’ launched by the UK Government earlier this year.

Ambassadors and high commissioners are being dispatched by the foreign secretary around the country to meet with businesses to support them to expand into key growth-driving markets.

The visit will build on an already thriving trading relationship with the UK’s second biggest trading partner Germany, which is worth almost £150 billion, supporting thousands of jobs across Hull and East Yorkshire.

Yorkshire and the Humber is a key region within this partnership, contributing significantly in terms of the UK’s exports to Germany, as well as imports from Germany to the UK.

Following a Visit Britain campaign to promote the north of England abroad, German visitors to Yorkshire and The Humber brought in just over £29m in 2024.

Siemens is a shining example of this relationship – working with the local community to help develop the next generation of engineers through their apprenticeship programme and school engagement projects.

Siemens Gamesa’s wind turbine blade factory at Greenport Hull last year announced a contract worth more than £1billion with ScottishPower, which is supporting 1,300 local jobs.

Cllr Ross said: “It was a pleasure to meet Ambassador Mitchell.

“The relationship between our region and Germany has blossomed recently and it was great to be able to showcase the fantastic work we are doing with Siemens to a wider audience.”
