The Hull Fair clean-up team.

60 tonnes of waste removed from Hull Fair

Hull City Council has confirmed that a total of 60.6 tonnes of waste was successfully removed from Hull Fair this year.

The council’s dedicated street cleansing and waste operative teams worked tirelessly throughout the event to ensure the site remained safe, welcoming, and clean for all visitors.

In the lead-up to the fair, the team ensured the grounds were in pristine condition ahead of opening night.

Then, each morning from 5am to 9am, the team of 40 staff carried out street cleansing and waste removal duties on Walton Street, the fairground itself, West Park, and surrounding areas.

In a major clean-up operation, each morning, two bin lorries were stationed at either end of Walton Street, before making their way down to collect waste and empty bins.

Ahead of them, designated team members cleared waste from beneath stalls using leaf blowers, before sweeping it into piles to streamline collection. Once the teams met in the middle, the entire area was thoroughly cleansed. This was repeated within the fairground itself.

In preparation for the rollout of Simpler Recycling in March 2026, each day two to three members of the team were designated to collect recycling, such as carboard, plastic bottles, and cans. This recycling was then collected by an electric vehicle designated for recycling, before being bulked up and taken to J&B Recycling for processing.

However, the commitment doesn’t stop there. Now that Hull Fair has concluded, the team will continue to visit the site during the dismantling of the rides and stalls, to ensure the site is completely free of litter and rubbish.

The site should be fully clear and restored by Wednesday 22 October.

The site was cleansed each morning.

Councillor Charles Quinn, cabinet portfolio holder for environment, said: “Hull Fair is one of the city’s most popular events, and ensuring it remains clean and safe is a top priority for the council.

“Our street cleansing and waste operative teams go above and beyond every year, and this year was no exception. Their dedication and hard work behind the scenes make a huge difference to the experience of thousands of visitors.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank every team member involved in this year’s clean-up operation – your hard work does not go unnoticed.”
