Hull City Council’s Love Your Neighbourhood team leads community litter-pick event

Hull City Council’s Love Your Neighbourhood team brought the community together earlier this month for a successful litter-picking event on Porter Street, off Anlaby Road.

The event focused on clearing litter and refreshing the memorial site at the corner of William Street and Porter Street. The area was identified for attention following recent Love Your Neighbourhood clean-up efforts in the St Andrews and Docklands ward.

To enhance community engagement, the team issued a call for volunteers, and many came out to help, including a group from Welcome House, made up of refugees and asylum seekers, who were eager to support the clean-up activities.

Volunteers were provided with gloves, bin bags, high-vis vests, and litter-pickers to ensure the activity was carried out safely and effectively. This community effort resulted in the collection of several bags of rubbish, significantly improving the cleanliness and appearance of the area.

The litter-picking event is part of the council’s ongoing efforts to encourage residents to look after the environment and promote a cleaner, greener city. By involving local residents, the council aims to foster an enhanced sense of care and respect for public spaces.

Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at Hull City Council said: “This event is a shining example of what we can achieve when we come together.

“Love Your Neighbourhood is not just about cleaning up – it’s about building connections and showing respect for the places and people that matter to us.

“It’s always encouraging to see the community come together like this. When local people are involved in looking after their neighbourhood, it creates a sense of ownership and pride—and that helps keep the area cleaner for longer.

“That said, the amount of litter the team continue to find in this area is disheartening. We hope this event inspires the local community to help keep the area clean and take pride in their surroundings.”

The Love Your Neighbourhood team, and the Area Team Co-coordinators would love to make this a regular event. Whether people want to volunteer once or on an ongoing basis, the team can support residents with equipment and coordination.

To help residents get involved in litter-picking activities, the Love Your Street team can loan: adult and child sized litter pickers; hi-vis vests; graffiti removal kits; litter collection sacks; and gloves.

Any litter that cannot go in household bins will be collected by the team.
