Four city centre buildings will benefit from energy efficiency and decarbonisation works thanks to almost £5m in government funding.
Hull City Council has been successful in securing £4,935,960 of funding from the government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.
This grant will support the council towards the delivery of the project which will see the Guildhall, Hull City Hall, Hull History Centre and the Wilson Centre subject to building energy efficiency and decarbonisation works.
Benefits of the works include estimated carbon savings of 3400 tonnes over the next 20 years and £154,000 of energy savings annually.
The scheme, run by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Salix, reaffirms the council’s commitment to its Hull 2030 Carbon Neutral Strategy and 2045 Net Zero targets.
This project follows the council’s ongoing energy efficiency and decarbonisation works at Western Library, Streetlife Museum and Treasury Building.
Cllr Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment at the council, said: “The council put forward a strong case for the benefits of investing in decarbonisation of our buildings and I’m delighted government funding has been allocated to support these schemes.
“This project demonstrates the council’s commitment to tackling climate change and its carbon neutral and net zero targets, whilst continuing the energy efficiency work already in place thanks to last year’s funding.
“This will bring long-term benefits for the city, both from a carbon production perspective and energy costs savings.”
Stakeholder engagement will be completed as the project gets underway before approval will be sought for contractor procurement from the council’s cabinet in July.
