Masonic Lodge on Beverley Road has been adopted into its conservation area.

New character appraisal for Beverley Road Conservation Area

A new character appraisal has been adopted for Beverley Road Conservation Area.

Following a re-survey in early 2024, the character of the conservation was identified as being poor, but with improving trends associated with the Beverley Road Townscape Heritage Scheme.

The Character Appraisal recognises both the weaknesses and strengths of the area, and establishes how the negatives elements of the area can be enhanced, such as the appearance of shop fronts and condition of buildings.

Hull City Council’s planning committee approved the additions of several buildings on Beverley Road, all of which were recognised for aspects such as architectural decoration, 19th century design and listed status.

These are 46-48, 85-87, 91-97 and 321-327 Beverley Road, as well as Masonic Lodge.

The boundaries of Beverley Road Conservation Area were also amended, removing Park Lane, Terry Street, St Hilda Street, Endeavor Learning Centre, Cave Street, Temple Street and Rose Mews, whilst transferring in the northside of Beech Grove from the Newland Conservation Area.

A new management plan was also approved meaning that the council should consider refusing planning applications of a poor quality and should instead seek enhancements to the conservation area.

The findings of the re-survey were subject to public feedback before being put forward to the planning committee.

Chris Jackson, director of regeneration at the council, said: “Beverley Road Conservation Area is one of Hull’s largest conservation areas characterised by a great variety of both historic and more modern buildings.

“A re-survey highlighted the need for updates and following public consultation and feedback some amendments have been made.

“This demonstrates the council’s commitment to ensuring all of its conservation areas are up-to-date and rightfully sustained.”
