Latest pocket park completed in Drypool

A brand new pocket park has been created by Hull City Council at the junction of Sherburn Street and New Bridge Road.

Improvements on the east Hull site in the Drypool area include the cleaning of footpaths and revitalised grassed areas, whilst the original rock sculpture has been maintained as a feature.

The central sculpture designed by children in the community has been restored with a view to being relocated elsewhere within the ward.

Worn or damaged structures and street furniture, as well as weeds and litter, have been removed in a bid to deter anti-social behaviour which had previously been a concern.

The land prior to Hull City Council’s pocket parks team made improvements.

The Drypool pocket park is now a more attractive area which the community can be proud of and will hopefully see it used more as an enjoyable social space.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at the council, said: “Pocket parks continue to help restore pride in community areas across the city.

“We have already seen the benefits the council’s programme has brought to other areas and it’s pleasing to see more unloved areas, such as this one in Drypool, become attractive spaces for socialising and activities.”

The space is now one which the community can be proud of.

More pocket parks are already in the pipeline across the city following the council’s two rounds of applications.

Pocket parks are aimed at turning disused or derelict pieces of land into community spaces to benefit the physical and mental health of residents and provide an opportunity for social activity.

They are small, green open spaces on council owned land and are no larger than 0.4 hectares.

Pocket parks are part of the council’s plan to make Hull a greener, cleaner and safer place to live.

The council is making sure the community is helping to design the selected areas and will also play an important role in after care once established.
