New family trail installed to help visitors explore museum in Hull’s old town

An exciting new family trail and interactive wall has been installed at the Hull and East Riding Museum of Archaeology, making it more accessible whilst highlighting stand out objects that bring the city’s history to life in new ways.

Families can have fun together exploring the museum with the help of a brand-new character trail and have a go at creating their own museum with a large interactive magnetic wall.

Characters include a curator and her friendly dog, Harry, who can be found in panels and labels distributed throughout the whole museum.

Starting in prehistory, families can follow Harry the dog through 235 million years of history as he hunts out some truly amazing finds from the collection.

Along the way, they will learn from the curator character what these incredible finds can teach us about our history.

Visitors are also warned to be alert for some whiffy smells! Each time period has its own unique smell and families can try to work out when they are from.

After completing the trail, visitors can create their very own museum on an interactive wall.

These improvements are part of an uplift to the museum as an approach to add more layered and accessible levels of interpretation for families and to highlight stand out significant objects from the collection that bring Hull’s history vividly to life.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure at Hull City Council, said: “We’re delighted to be able to put the spotlight on some of the amazing treasures in our collection that feature in this fun family friendly trail.

“We look forward to visitors smelling the past and having a go at making their own mini museum displays!”
