The Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull is to compete in the upcoming British Chess Championships, which will be held in the city.
Councillor Mark Collinson is a competitive player in the sport, and has played in the tournament previously when it has been held in other towns and cities.
It is returning to Hull later this month for the first time since 2021, with the event taking place between Thursday 25 July and Sunday 4 August.
Matches will be contested at Hull City Hall and at DoubleTree by Hilton Hull on Ferensway.
The Lord Mayor will take part in the Over 65 category.
He said: “Naturally, I am delighted that this event is returning to Hull.
“Many players from around the country have told me how much they enjoyed their last visit here.
“Hopefully this time will be even better – and hopefully my play will be better as well!”
It will be the 110th time the Championships takes place, with the first tournament going ahead in 1904.
There are dozens of different categories of play, going all the way down to under-8s level.
Organisers will also put on an extensive social chess programme, with a series of chess-related events around the city.
Hull City Council has boosted chess in the community via the installation of chess tables in East Park and Pearson Park, whilst the Lord Mayor recently opened ChessFest Hull, which has a focus on promoting junior involvement.
