Litterbugs in Hull have been ordered to cough up almost £7,000 after failing to pay fixed penalties.
Twenty-three people who were caught littering in the city did not pay the £100 penalties and have now been prosecuted.
They were ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £6,983 and each received a criminal record.
The offences took place across Hull in February and March last year.
Hull City Council is now urging people to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.
Councillor Julia Conner, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “Making Hull cleaner and greener is one of our top priorities. That’s why it’s so infuriating when people drop litter.
“Littering not only makes our streets look ugly, but it also harms our environment and wildlife.
“We are once again asking everyone to do their part in keeping Hull clean and tidy by disposing of their rubbish in litter bins or by taking it home with them.”
Keep Britain Tidy says more than two million pieces of litter are dropped in the UK every day, with taxpayers footing the bill of about £1billion a year in clean-up costs.
Anyone who drops litter can expect to receive a £100 fixed penalty, which is reduced to £80 if paid within the early-payment period.
If they fail to pay, they can be prosecuted and end up with a criminal record and a fine of up to £2,500.
