Residents in Orchard Park are being urged to protect a newly built nature area designed to help alleviate flooding in the neighbourhood.
The lake and fishing pond sits off Danepark Road and forms part of the Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation Scheme.
It will protect the area from flooding and will be stocked with fish next year where local groups will offer free fishing sessions for young people.
Now residents and visitors are being urged to take care of the area following a spate of criminal damage and vandalism.

Councillor Mike Thompson, portfolio holder for flood prevention, said: “During the devastating floods in 2007, more than 1,000 homes were damaged in Orchard Park, destroying residents’ personal belongings, and I am aware that the three ward councillors have supported the flood prevention works, but further protection is required.
“The need for flood protection is critical. Without this scheme, parts of Orchard Park could suffer from flooding reaching up to 1.2 metres. The damage to properties would be destructive.
“However, residents in the area need to help protect this vital infrastructure by reporting those who vandalise this nature reserve.”
More than 4,000 letters have been distributed to residents advising them to take care of the area.
