The Lord Mayor, Councillor Steve Wilson, will visit children’s centres across Hull on Wednesday 5 August as National Play Day takes a new form for 2020.
The UK-wide celebration of children’s play, usually celebrated as a mass event in Queen’s Gardens, has been adapted due to the current restrictions on large-scale events, with organisations holding activities in locations all over the city.
The Lord Mayor will visit The Parks, Lemon Tree and Marfleet children’s centres, as well as the Leisure and Freetime Support Service (LAFSS) on Bellfield Avenue as activities take place throughout the day for local families.
Heather Barnes, Early Help Manager for Hull City Council said:
“We’re obviously disappointed we are unable to hold the annual event in Queen’s Gardens which is visited by thousands of families each year. However our priority remains to keep the residents of Hull safe, so we have worked hard to hold as many free activities as possible in various locations for children to enjoy.
“These activities form part of our healthy holidays programme that is running across the summer holidays and includes something for children, young people and parents and carers to enjoy in safe environments led by trusted professionals.”

Activities taking place throughout the day include:
- puppet making and ‘fun in the garden’ – Parks children’s centre 11am – 1pm
- mini play day and puppet making – Lemon Tree children’s centre 11.30 – 1.15pm
- circus – East Park entrance (hosted by Marfleet children’s centre 10.30am – 12noon
- underwater themed activities – LAFSS (Bellfield Avenue) 12.30 – 4.30pm
