The sun plans to shine this weekend, we are told, so ditch the umbrellas and dig out the wide-brimmed hat for a few days of fun.
The Big Malarkey Festival in East Park is top of the agenda for bookworms and their parents, while the Hull area also has a couple of interesting exhibitions if the heat get too much.
We have cheated a bit this week – so here are four things to do in Hull and the surrounding area this weekend, plus one starting on Monday …
Big Malarkey Festival
Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June
East Park
Tickets £6 adults, £3 children
The annual children’s literacy festival takes place this weekend. Over the past week, school children have been visiting the children’s literacy festival in East Park, where they have entered a world of stories and imagination. Nick Sharatt, award-winning illustrator of Tracy Beaker and the Jacqueline Wilson books, is one of the names appearing at the annual literacy festival. Learn more here.
The National Archives Of The Republic Of The Homeless
Artlink in Princes Avenue
Saturday 29 June-Thursday 28 August, 10am-4pm
Free
Artist Vanessa Cardui has spent six months working with members of Hull’s homeless community and Artlink on a project that has become this exhibition. Vanessa hopes to present a glimpse into understanding what it’s like having no home. This comes in the form of an archive- an effort to organise artworks made by the homeless and ex-homeless of Hull. She aims to confront questions of value, authenticity, belonging, loss, and the idea that anyone’s history can be buried when certain structures fall out of place.
Summer Plant Fair
Burton Constable Hall
Sunday 30 June, 10am-5pm
Entry £11.50 for adults, various concessions
With a sunny weekend in the offing, keen gardeners should think about taking a short drive outside of the city for a Summer Plant Fair in the beautiful grounds of Burton Constable Hall. Visitors can browse a range of stalls on the South Lawns selling plants, garden ornaments, gifts and more. Talks, tours, trails, live music and food will be available in the hall’s majestic parkland.
