Conservation area and social hotspot adopts new character appraisal

Princes Avenue.

Princes Avenue Conservation Area has had a new character appraisal and management plan (CAMP) adopted.

Following public consultation on proposed changes, the new CAMP was adopted by Hull City Council’s planning committee.

A resurvey identified Princes Avenue Conservation Area as being vulnerable to negative changes.

The new CAMP seeks to ensure the street’s architectural value is preserved and enhanced, meaning any changes are positively managed by providing detailed guidance on how alterations to shop fronts and advertisements should be undertaken to ensure they complement the area.

As part of the updates, notifications have been made to local business and property owners identifying when planning permission and advertisement consent is needed for relevant development within the conservation area.

80 Princes Avenue has been proposed for addition to the Hull Local Heritage List.

Having been identified as being one of the best-preserved shop fronts along the street, 80 Princes Avenue is being proposed for addition to the Hull Local Heritage List.

Princes Avenue Conservation Area is the 14th area in Hull to have been resurveyed as part of the council’s commitment to ensuring all 26 of its conservation areas are up to date.

Alex Codd, assistant director for economic development and regeneration at the council, said: “Princes Avenue is one of Hull’s most popular areas for socialising.

“As it continues to move forward with the ever-changing hospitality sector, it is important that we recognise the area’s heritage and ensure that buildings are preserved correctly and this is exactly what the new character appraisal and management plan will do.

“We would like to thank the public for their feedback on the proposals.”
