Hull City Council has confirmed the new name of Bradbury House will be Lil Bilocca House.
The local authority agreed to buy the building in Porter Street, Hull, in June. It had been used as the headquarters of charity Age UK Hull since it was built in 2001.
The building will be named after Lillian Bilocca, one of the Headscarf Revolutionaries whose trawler safety campaign in the 1960s is thought to have saved thousands of lives.
The new name will be unveiled on December 17 by Lord Mayor Lynn Petrini in front of members of Lillian’s family.
Councillor Daren Hale, deputy leader of Hull City Council, said: “When you buy a building, you have the right to rename it and we thought it was fitting to name it after Lil Bilocca. We obviously had to seek her permission of her son, Ernie, and he was delighted.
“I think it’s really important because not least there aren’t many buildings named after women and she was not only a local woman but also a working class woman, so it’s a really good day for the city.
“We will be unveiling the new name on December 17 and while, there will be restrictions, the Lord Mayor will be there to unveil it with Ernie as it’s important that the family have their day. It’s long overdue that Lil receives this kind of recognition in the city.”
The purchase has allowed staff from the council to move from older properties in the city to the modern office space inside Bradbury House as part of its corporate property strategy.
This includes about 60 social services staff from the nearby Myton Centre in William Street, which is being acquired by Highways England as part of the A63 Castle Street major highways scheme.
