White Ribbon Day calls for people to never commit violence against women

Today is international White Ribbon Day – a day where every year thousands of people stand up, speak out and say no to violence against women and girls.

In Hull, agencies across the city will be actively participating and speaking out, including youth services, schools, youth parliament and the voluntary sector, who are recruiting White Ribbon Youth Ambassadors to raise awareness amongst young people. #hullyoungpeoplesayno are also hosting a White Ribbon young people’s summit.

Matt Jukes, Chief Executive of Hull City Council said: “This year, it’s even more important that, as a city, we join together to raise awareness so that we can make Hull a safer place to live and work. Please reach out to offer support to friends, families and neighbours so they don’t suffer in silence and offer reassurances that support is still very much available for them to access.”

Councillor Mike Thompson, Portfolio Holder for neighbourhoods and communities said: “There has been a huge increase in domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women during the pandemic and services have seen a surge in those coming forward seeking support.

“I’d like to see as many people as possible sign the pledge to never commit, excuse or remain silent about abuse.”
