Hull’s Pest Control Team nets national award

When it comes to whacking wasps, battling bed bugs and get rid of rats, Hull City Council’s Pest Control Team are the best in the country. The team beat more than 100 competitors to take the title of Best Local Authority team at the National Pest Awards in Manchester last week. The annual awards honour the best in the sector and attract fierce competition from around the country.

Hull’s team found out they had made it to the finals earlier this year, alongside colleagues from the East Riding. In contrast to their day-to-day work trapping cockroaches, flushing out rodents and seeing off flying infestations, the award ceremony was a night of food, music and celebration.

Cllr Charles Quinn, whose portfolio includes Environmental Health, said: “We’re very proud of the team for this well-deserved award. The category for the local authority team of the year recognises teams’ commitment, professionalism and consistently going beyond the call of duty. It also reflects a focus on skill development and progression.

“The team demonstrate all these qualities, working hard day-to-day to keep pests out of Hull homes and businesses. In addition to treating problems, they put a lot of work into educating and informing people on how best to prevent them coming back.

“Pest control is a vital part of keeping homes and businesses clean and safe. It’s work which often goes unseen and uncelebrated and winning the award, along with attending the ceremony, was a fantastic way to honour how hard the team works – particularly over a long, hot summer when pests can flourish”. The council’s Pest Control Team can treat a wide range of issues, including rats, mice, cockroaches, flies, fleas, wasps, bedbugs and squirrels.
